  3.          Free Radio in Finland
  4. ---------------------------------------
  5.   In  this  second  article  about Free 
  6. Radio  we discuss  about the free radio 
  7. in Finland.
  8.   It's  not a very well-known fact that
  9. were  we  to go to talk about the birth 
  10. of Finnish pirateradios, we  would have  
  11. to go  back to  the 1940's.  The  first 
  12. illegal  radio stations in Finland were 
  13. very radical  political stations  which
  14. operated during the World War II.  They
  15. were  operated by the Finnish left-wing 
  16. communists  and  they   broadcast  from 
  17. forests near Lahti and  Helsinki in the
  18. southern  Finland.  The "programs" were
  19. of course  radical  political  speeches
  20. against legal government of Finland and
  21. the war with the Soviet Union.
  22.   Next  pirate which could be described
  23. as 'Finnish' was  Radio Nord.  In fact,
  24. Radio  Nord operated  off  the  Swedish 
  25. coast  near   Stockholm  in  the  early 
  26. 1960's.The station  could be heard very 
  27. well  here   in  Finland, too, and  the 
  28. founder of Nord,Jack Kotschach,was born

  30. in Finland.  Radio Nord was closed down 
  31. in the early  1960's after  a short but 
  32. succesful life,and soon after that were 
  33. born the first real Finnish pirates.
  34.   Although  we  have  only  few details
  35. from the 60's,we believe that the first
  36. Finnish   landbased   pirate radio  was 
  37. Radio  Troyan.  Troyan  operated in the 
  38. south  of Finland  broadcasting both on 
  39. FM and on the medium long waves. Troyan 
  40. started broadcasts  right in 1964,  and 
  41. they were still operating in 1968.
  42.   When  we arrive to the 70's,  we find
  43. that the  idea  of  free radios  became
  44. more  and more  common.  Right  in  the 
  45. early  70's  there  were  several small 
  46. pirate   projects   especially  in  the 
  47. coastal  areas, for example Pori, Rauma 
  48. and Turku.  In 1973 and 1974 The Public 
  49. Broadcasting  Company  of  Finland  had 
  50. some  long  strikes.  People  who  were 
  51. interested  in  free radio noticed that 
  52. now it was a good time to get hundreds,
  53. even thousands of listeners  when there
  54. were no other  stations  on the  air on
