- Free Radio in Finland
- ---------------------------------------
- In this second article about Free
- Radio we discuss about the free radio
- in Finland.
- It's not a very well-known fact that
- were we to go to talk about the birth
- of Finnish pirateradios, we would have
- to go back to the 1940's. The first
- illegal radio stations in Finland were
- very radical political stations which
- operated during the World War II. They
- were operated by the Finnish left-wing
- communists and they broadcast from
- forests near Lahti and Helsinki in the
- southern Finland. The "programs" were
- of course radical political speeches
- against legal government of Finland and
- the war with the Soviet Union.
- Next pirate which could be described
- as 'Finnish' was Radio Nord. In fact,
- Radio Nord operated off the Swedish
- coast near Stockholm in the early
- 1960's.The station could be heard very
- well here in Finland, too, and the
- founder of Nord,Jack Kotschach,was born

- in Finland. Radio Nord was closed down
- in the early 1960's after a short but
- succesful life, and soon after that were
- born the first real Finnish pirates.
- Although we have only few details
- from the 60's,we believe that the first
- Finnish landbased pirate radio was
- Radio Troyan. Troyan operated in the
- south of Finland broadcasting both on
- FM and on the medium long waves. Troyan
- started broadcasts right in 1964, and
- they were still operating in 1968.
- When we arrive to the 70's, we find
- that the idea of free radios became
- more and more common. Right in the
- early 70's there were several small
- pirate projects especially in the
- coastal areas, for example Pori, Rauma
- and Turku. In 1973 and 1974 The Public
- Broadcasting Company of Finland had
- some long strikes. People who were
- interested in free radio noticed that
- now it was a good time to get hundreds,
- even thousands of listeners when there
- were no other stations on the air on
